Season 5 Guide: Moonlit Elegy

By Blek (Blake - bddc.co.uk) ·

Vampires, werewolves and a witch who deals cards. Season 5 looks complicated, but it comes down to a few daily habits and one permanent prize: red stars for your heroes.

1. Overview

Moonlit Elegy gives Last Z a gothic night-time setting. Werewolves and Succubi replace the old seasonal monsters, and the map belongs to vampires after dark. The core loop is the same as earlier seasons: seasonal buildings, monster hunting, neutral cities and Glory War. On top of that sit three new systems:

  • Red stars (Hero Awakening): Oliveira, Scarlett and Evelyn can go beyond 5 stars, up to 5 red stars. This is permanent.
  • The Mysterious Witch and Moonlight Cards: 52 cards that buff your troops for the rest of the season.
  • Night Falls: a daily night window where Night Succubi roam the map, getting longer every week until the night never ends.
LengthAbout 71 days (just over 10 weeks)
GroupingFour states grouped together for the whole season
MapFull reset: resource tiles reset and every neutral city starts unowned
Mastery capRaised from 70 to 90
New heroesNone. Three existing heroes get red stars instead
Seasonal resourcesHoly Water and Shadow Blood Crystals
Season 5 or Season 4? On states 1 to 320 this is Season 5. Newer states, which started with a different first season, call the same content Season 4. The systems are identical, so this guide covers both. Seasons reach states in batches: the first states started Moonlit Elegy on 20 May 2026, and states 193 to 256 were moving into it in late October 2026.

2. What Stays and What Disappears

A season is a temporary layer on top of your account. The single most useful idea for Moonlit Elegy is: turn temporary things into permanent ones before the season ends.

Gone when the season endsYours to keep
Moonlight Cards and every buff they giveRed stars on your heroes
The Witch's affection levelMastery levels
Seasonal buildingsAnything you buy with Moon Tokens (wrenches, badges, fragments)
Holy Water, Shadow Blood Crystals and Silver IngotsAwakening Badges you have not spent yet

3. Seasonal Buildings and Resources

The buildings do the same jobs as in earlier seasons, under new names:

PriorityBuildingWhat it does
1Serum LaboratoryRaises Virus Resistance, which decides the highest-level Werewolf and Succubus you can attack
2Shadow SpringProduces Holy Water passively. Higher levels produce more
3Command CenterSeason troop damage
4Fire Control CenterSeason troop attack
5Defensive FortressSeason troop defence
  • Holy Water comes from the Shadow Spring.
  • Shadow Blood Crystals drop from Werewolves and Succubi. Some versions of the game call them Sanguine Crystals.
  • Every building upgrade needs both.
Keep the Serum Lab upgrading, always. Virus Resistance gates everything: no resistance means no higher-level monsters, which means no crystals, which means no buildings. The classic mistake is spreading resources evenly across all five buildings and finding by week 6 that you cannot kill anything worthwhile.

Never spend your seasonal resources down to zero. Individual end-of-season rewards are based on how much seasonal resource you still hold, so always leave a stockpile.

Plan your upgrades and track costs with the S5 Tile Upgrades planner.

4. Monsters and Fuel

MonsterFuelNotes
Werewolf8The everyday target. Cheap, and fine to farm while your Virus Resistance is low
Succubus16The season's Boomer. Needs more Virus Resistance, but drops far more crystals, plus Moon Tokens at higher levels
Night Succubus16Appears only during Night Falls. Rally it with your alliance
The Fury Lord–A three-headed vampire hellhound (players call it Cerberus). It follows the same rules as earlier Fury Lords
  • Get one first kill every day. A first kill drops a golden chest with a Demon Stone (occasionally two), and Demon Stones level up the Witch. It takes 30 seconds.
  • Monster drops have a daily limit. During Sanguine Crystal Proliferation the number of rewarded kills is halved but each one drops double crystals, Demon Stones and Moon Tokens.
  • Do not force fights against high-level Succubi you can barely beat. You pay double fuel for a worse return. Kill what you can kill efficiently, and put the crystals back into the Serum Lab.
  • You cannot start a rally on a monster above your Virus Resistance, but you can join one.

5. Red Stars: Hero Awakening

Season 5 adds no new heroes. Instead, the three original season heroes can be awakened past 5 stars with up to 5 red stars (shown as stars 6 to 10). Red stars are permanent, which makes them the real prize of the season.

HeroFactionTroopsHero pass opens
OliveiraBlood RoseAssaultersSeason day 2
ScarlettWings of DawnShootersSeason day 9
EvelynGuard of OrderRidersSeason day 16

What you need to awaken a hero

  1. The hero at 5 orange stars.
  2. Their Exclusive Equipment activated. It only needs to be activated, not upgraded.
  3. 10 Awakening Badges for that specific hero. Universal Awakening Badges cannot do the first activation. After that, hero-specific and universal badges both work.

Free players can get hero-specific badges from Volcano War rewards, so you do not have to buy the hero pass to activate a hero.

What each red star gives

Each hero gets four upgrades, unlocked as their red stars rise:

UpgradeOliveiraScarlettEvelyn
+300 damage factorFatal BlowShadow AssaultHeavy Armor Soldier
+450 damage factorBlade StormEM PulseFire Suppression
+10% troop damageGifted GirlPower of DominanceQueen's Orders
+50% to Potential UnleashedThe faction bonus rises by half: a full five-hero faction squad goes from +10% to +15% troop capacity, and each hero's +5% becomes +7.5%

Red stars also raise the hero's base attack, defence and troop capacity at every step, and a full 5 red stars unlocks an exclusive appearance.

What it costs

Each red star has 5 steps. The badge cost per step climbs steeply:

StageBadges per stepBadges for the stageRunning totalSkill level cap
Activation–10 (hero-specific)1030
Red star 13152535
Red star 25255040
Red star 3105010045
Red star 43015025050
Red star 55025050055

So 3 red stars use only 20% of the full cost, 4 red stars use half, and the fifth star alone costs the other half. Fully awakening all three heroes takes 1,500 badges.

Skill books are the hidden second cost. The skill cap rises by one with each step, from 30 to 55, but the levels still have to be bought:

Skill levelsBooks per levelBooks for the stage
30 → 356003,000
35 → 408004,000
40 → 451,0005,000
45 → 501,5007,500
50 → 552,00010,000

That is 29,500 books per skill, or 88,500 for a hero's three skills: almost three times what levels 1 to 30 cost.

Where to get Awakening Badges

  • Full Preparedness: reach 18 points every day for a Universal Awakening Badge choice box. That is around 70 free badges over the season, and the best free deal in Moonlit Elegy.
  • Camila's Shop, open from day 1 (see below).
  • Champion Duel, Alliance Treasure Hunt and the Lucky Choice Chest (Awakening Badge theme).
  • Glory War and the end-of-season alliance rankings, which pay S5 Awakening Badge choice boxes.
  • The Moon Shop and Night Market, for Moon Tokens.
  • The paid hero passes and packs, if you spend.
Pick one hero and commit. Spread across three heroes, your badges buy three half-finished heroes. Put them into the hero who leads the faction you actually play, and treat 3 or 4 red stars as a strong target before you think about the expensive fifth.

6. The Mysterious Witch

The Witch is the heart of the season. Hand her Demon Stones to raise her affection level. Every level gives a reward: Moonlight Vouchers, card chests, badges, power cores, speed-ups and resources. Her maximum level is 60.

Affection levelWhat it unlocks
3Moonlight Vouchers can be exchanged for card draws
10Moonlight Blessing: cards can be equipped to your troops. This is when cards start giving real power
21More blessing slots
33All 12 slots active at 100% effect
34–60More rewards, but no further power spikes
  • Rush her to level 10, then push on to 33.
  • Demon Stones come from first kills, Succubus hunts, the Night Ritual, seasonal events and the Moon Shop. You do not need to grind them: players who simply played normally have finished the season with over 120,000 stones left over.
  • Hand stones in as you get them. Saving them up gains nothing.

7. Moonlight Cards

The Moonlight Collection has 52 cards in three rarities: blue (small buffs, easy to get), purple (mid-tier) and gold (the ones you want). They buff troop attack, defence, HP and damage, for this season only.

  • Spend Moonlight Vouchers in Moonlight Divination: one voucher, one draw. Reaching set numbers of draws unlocks extra cards.
  • A card you already own converts into Moon Tokens automatically. Rarer cards give more, so duplicates are never wasted.
  • Each card can only sit in one slot.

The 12 gold cards

CardBuff
SSR 1 and 2Season troop defence +15%
SSR 3Season troop HP +3%
SSR 4, 5 and 6Season troop attack +15%
SSR 7 and 8Season troop damage +5%
SSR 9Season troop damage reduction +3%
SSR 10Season Assaulter damage +7.5%
SSR 11Season Shooter damage +7.5%
SSR 12Season Rider damage +7.5%

The purple and blue cards offer the same kinds of buff at lower values.

Open your chests in the right order

The most expensive mistake of the season is opening your selectable gold card chests too early. Pick a card on day 3 and a random draw may hand you the same card two weeks later, as Moon Tokens. Instead:

  1. Spend every Moonlight Voucher first in Divination.
  2. Then open your random card chests.
  3. Only then open the selectable chests, picking the gold cards you are still missing.

Setting up Moonlight Blessing

The blessing grid has four rows of three slots. Rows 1 to 3 buff formations 1 to 3. Row 4 is not a fourth formation: cards there buff every formation at once, which makes it the most valuable row on the board.

  • Row 4 (all formations): troop HP +3%, troop damage +5% and damage reduction +3%. Damage reduction is the rarest buff of the season, so it belongs here.
  • Row 1 (main formation): your troop type's +7.5% damage card, troop attack +15% and troop damage +5%.
  • Rows 2 and 3: that formation's troop type damage card, troop attack +15% (there are three, one per formation) and troop defence +15%.

Match the troop card to the formation: Shooters for Wings of Dawn, Assaulters for Blood Rose, Riders for Guard of Order. Because nothing carries over, there is no risk in committing every card to your main troop type. If you move heroes between formations later, re-check that the cards still match.

8. Night Falls

The season's signature daily event. Night falls three times a day, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 Apocalypse Time (02:00, 10:00 and 18:00 UK time), and Night Succubi appear on the map. Some servers have reported only the 08:00 and 16:00 windows, so check the timer under the moon icon on your screen.

  • Each night lasts 1 hour in week 1 and gets 1 hour longer every week. From the Monday of week 8 the world enters endless night.
  • Fight alone or rally them with your alliance.
  • The weekly ranking goes by the highest-level Night Succubus you have slain, with ties going to whoever got there first. Rewards are mailed the following Monday.
Start your own rallies. Only the player who launches the rally and lands the kill gets ranking credit. Joiners only get participation rewards. Anyone can launch a Night Succubus rally; no officer has to organise it. If you only ever auto-join, you are leaving the better rewards to the same two or three people every week.

The weekly rally milestones:

Launch or join 20 rallies75151

Night Succubus kills also drop Moon Tokens directly, up to a daily limit.

9. The Weekly Events

Season 5 adds a full calendar of night-themed events. Times are in Apocalypse Time (UK time minus 2 hours).

Check the days on your server. The event days are not the same everywhere. Some servers' info screens show the Night Ritual on Monday and Seal the Countess on Wednesday; others show Seal the Countess on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Open each event's info page in game to see your own schedule.

Fiend Hunter's Request (daily)

  • Starts at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 Apocalypse Time, when 12 Fiend Hunter camps appear on the map: 3 orange and 9 purple.
  • Zoom out on the world map and scroll until you spot a camp icon. Once anyone in your alliance finds a camp, it unlocks for the whole alliance.
  • Each camp offers tasks such as training troops, using speed-ups, upgrading equipment or killing Night Succubi. You can hold one task at a time and complete three a day.
  • Orange tasks pay about 250 to 300 Moon Tokens, plus extras. They go fast, so be online when the camps appear.
  • One option, the Umbral Contract, asks you to spend Gold Bars. It uses up one of your three daily tasks, and you can ignore it.

Night Ritual

  • Three 50-minute sessions, starting at 00:10, 08:10 and 16:10.
  • Night Altars appear at random on the map. Zoom out to find them.
  • Phase 1: defeat the 3 Night Priests around the altar. You can hit these directly.
  • Phase 2: once all three priests fall, the Night Gargoyle appears. Rally it.
  • Ritual Chests drop as the bosses lose HP. Each chest can be claimed by up to 5 players, once each, and you can claim 10 a day. Chests time out, so grab them quickly and share any you have opened in chat for others.
  • Damage rankings against the priests and the Gargoyle are mailed after the event day ends.

Seal the Countess

  • Three 50-minute sessions, starting at 00:10, 08:10 and 16:10.
  • After the first session, Night Countesses appear in each alliance's 3 highest-level neutral cities (never the Capital). Only the alliance that holds the city can attack its Countess, and you need to team up to kill her.
  • Every Countess that appears adds a curse stack to her city, up to 3. Curses cut the city's capture buffs, alliance stone production and season point growth.
  • Kill her and all the curses on that city are lifted. Leave her and the curse stays until 00:00 on the next event day.
  • Cities cannot be declared war on while the event is running.
  • Rewards include Silver Ingots, Moon Tokens and badges. Everyone who took part in the kill gets an extra reward.

Endless Night Duke (from week 4)

The season's state boss: an ancient vampire who gets stronger every week.

  1. Donate Silver Ingots (from the Countess) at the Capital, from week 4 onwards. Together the state forges the Silver Artifact, which helps everyone against the Duke.
  2. On Sunday, the President picks the fight time from three slots: 01:00–02:00, 09:00–10:00 or 17:00–18:00 Apocalypse Time (03:00, 11:00 or 19:00 UK time).
  3. The whole state attacks him around the Capital. Teleporting close saves a lot of marching time.
  4. Rewards are ranked by damage. When he falls, steel factories appear around the Capital for anyone to gather from.

Silver Ingots are removed when the next season starts, so donate them all.

Vampire Guards

The season's version of the Hunter Yetis and Predator Squads: vampire guards roam the map and can attack your base. Keep a shield handy when they are out.

10. Shops and Moon Tokens

Camila's Shop (day 1)

Open from the first day. Choose between Universal Awakening Badges and Universal Orange Hero Fragments. Spend your coins here on day 1 of your season rather than leaving them sitting.

Trade Hubs and the Night Market (day 11)

The Trade Hubs (Trading Stations) return from Season 4 on day 11, and with them comes the Night Market, which takes Moon Tokens. Owning a hub gives your alliance early access, exclusive items and a share of what others spend, so the hubs are fought over all season.

The Moon Shop

Opens in week 2 and sells for Moon Tokens. A new set of items unlocks every Monday, and you can see the coming weeks' items greyed out. Buy in this order:

  1. Golden Wrenches. Buy every one, at any discount or none. They are the scarcest item in the shop, about 25 across the season. See tank wrenches.
  2. Universal Exclusive Equipment Fragments.
  3. Badges, including Universal Awakening Badges.
  4. Power Cores. Hero equipment moves between heroes, so cores are never wasted.
  5. Universal Orange Hero Fragments.
  6. Random plug-in and vehicle part chests.
  7. Enhancement Alloys, with whatever is left.

Moon Tokens come from duplicate cards, Succubus and Night Succubus kills, Night Falls milestones, the Fiend Hunter's Request, the Countess and the Night Ritual. Spend them all before the season ends.

11. Glory War Changes

Glory War works as before, with one big change: winning a battle steals 20% of the losing alliance's Glory Points, and they lose the same amount. In the final round, it is 25%.

Two alliances on 20 million points each: one battle later, the winner has 24 million and the loser 16 million. That is an 8-million swing from a single fight, so a comfortable lead can disappear in the last days. Keep strength back for the final round.

Missiles, the Warlord, Alliance Center placement and how other alliances can help a defender have also changed. Players report that defending is much harder than before, so plan your Alliance Center position and your defence carefully.

Glory War wins are also one of your main sources of Awakening Badges.

12. Season Rankings

Alliances are ranked on season points at the end of the season. Rewards include S5 Awakening Badge choice boxes, Universal Exclusive Equipment fragments, diamonds and speed-ups.

13. Mastery up to Level 90

Levels 1 to 70 are unchanged. Levels 75 to 90 add new abilities on two paths. Below level 30 you are on Support automatically; from 30 you choose.

15. Your Daily Routine

Ten minutes a day covers the parts that matter:

  1. Serum Lab upgrading. Never let it sit idle.
  2. One first kill for your Demon Stone, and hand the stones to the Witch.
  3. Full Preparedness to 18 points for your free Awakening Badge box.
  4. Night Falls: launch your own Night Succubus rallies, do not just auto-join.
  5. Fiend Hunter's Request: three tasks, orange ones first.
  6. Turn up for that day's event: Night Ritual, Seal the Countess or, on Sundays, the Duke.
  7. Never empty your seasonal resources completely.

Safe to ignore: cosmetic skins, mid-tier bundles and spreading hero fragments thinly across several heroes.

16. Summary

Moonlit Elegy is four loops: the Serum Lab unlocks stronger monsters, monsters drop crystals and Demon Stones, the Witch turns stones into cards, and cards and buildings win Glory War, which pays the Awakening Badges that make your heroes permanently stronger. Keep the Serum Lab busy, get the Witch to level 10 fast, open card chests in the right order, lead your own Night Falls rallies, spend every Moon Token, and pour your badges into one hero.
